How to measure website conversions correctly

Define conversion events that represent meaningful outcomes and keep reporting consistent.

A conversion is an agreed outcome, not whichever button is easiest to count. If definitions drift, teams cannot tell whether performance changed or the measurement did.

Separate outcomes from signals

A verified purchase, accepted lead or completed registration may be a primary outcome. A pricing view or form start can help diagnose progress but should be labelled as an intermediate signal. Write down the exact completion condition and who owns the definition.

Count once and at the right moment

Fire conversion measurement after success is confirmed, not when a visitor merely clicks submit. Deduplicate reloads and retries where possible, and reconcile orders or leads with the system of record. Make sure redirects and single-page navigation do not lose the event.

Report rate and volume together

Conversion rate depends on its denominator: sessions, users or qualified visits produce different interpretations. Name the denominator in reports and include absolute counts. Segment only to answer a question, and review lead or order quality so an increase in quantity does not hide a decline in value.
